The Royal Champagne Crystal Works – art in the service of champagne
The Royal Champagne Crystal Works is one of the largest French manufacturers of mouth-blown crystal.
Manufacturing began in 1678, in BAYEL, when the famous Venetian master glass worker, Jean-Baptiste MAZZOLAY, obtained authorisation from the Sun King to set up a workshop here.
Ever since that time, a prestigious signature has been associated with the astonishing creativity made possible by crystal, born of the know-how of generations of craftsmen.
Mouth blowing, hand etching, sand engraving, frosting, gilding, platinum plating, enamelling...all these techniques and more pay homage to the fire around which this craft revolves.
The fruit of a ritual and of a tradition constantly renewed, the art of shaping a unique object continues both in the contemporary designs and in the rediscovery of more ancient models which form the heritage of the Works.
To discover these prestigious ancient trades, the Bayel Tourist Information Office organises daily guided tours of the workshops at the Royal Champagne Crystal Works at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. from Mondays to Fridays (except public holidays and annual leave between Christmas and New Year's Day and in August). Guided tours in English, German and Italian.
