Collectors
The world of champagne bubbles with collectors. From placomusophilia to oenolabelphilia...there's something for every enthusiast.
Placomusophilia
This is the art of collecting the wire cage plates or "capsules" from champagne bottles.
In 1844, Adolphe Jacquesson had the idea of inserting a metal plate between the champagne cork and the wire, thus disseminating the pressure and preventing damage to the cork. Because Champagne is a sparkling wine, the pressure inside the bottle pushes the cork outwards. The wire cage thus keeps the cork in place, thanks to the plate.
Until the 1960s, most champagne capsules contained four notches or cuts. The plates were plain for many years, before a tradition began of stamping or embossing the word champagne.
In 1906, the maison Paul Roger decorated a plate for the first time. The decoration will added a little colour and fantasy to distinguish the vintages and cuvees and to communicate a particular image.
The capsule then went from strength to strength, becoming an object of decoration, advertising and soon, of course, collection.
