Coteaux Champenois
The still red, white or rosé wines of the Coteaux Champenois meet the same conditions as the Champagne appellation.
Until the 1800s, they represented the 9/10 of wine production in Champagne. The growing success of sparkling champagne wines, however, ensured their reputation and quality fell. They came back into favour and obtained their AOC in 1974.
The wines are rich, supple and light, usually named after the village in which they were produced: Ambonnay, Bouzy, Cumières…
