The Royal Champagne Crystal Works

Enjoy some fine champagne in a flute made by the Royal Champagne Crystal Works in Bayel!

It was a Venetian master glassworker, Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay, who in 1666 founded the Manufacture Royale en Cristaux de Bayel, which later became the Cristallerie Champagne de Champagne by an edict issued by Louis XIV. Thanks to the expertise handed down from generation to generation over several centuries, the master glassmakers still blow glass by mouth and cut and etch it by hand.

Armed with a hollow rod and a mallet, the master glassmakers blow the crystal before your very eyes before drawing a "leg" (stem of the flute) from a single molten droplet gently placed on the cooled glass.

Crystal museum

Housed in the premises of the tourist office, the Bayel Ecomusuem – Crystal Museum presents the history and technique of crystal manufacture.

A family visit can be as spectacular as it can educational. It can even be extended by a tour of the nearby crystal museum.
