In addition to the iconic crane, many birds have taken up residence around the lac du Der, the lakes of the Forêt d'Orient and the surrounding ponds (Outines ponds, La Horre pond, etc.).

The Important Bird Areas (IBA)
IBAs are areas that are home to a particularly rich and varied stock of birds, whether they are species passing through on their migration, or wintering or nesting birds. Specific protective measures are taken in these areas.
In Champagne-Ardenne, there are 11 IBAs that represent an area of 418,000 ha. Among them is the IBA of Bassigny, a territory where Black Kites are often to be seen passing through.
