The meander of the Meuse at Monthermé
The perfect loop, to admire from the Roche à Sept Heures…
On its journey from the Bassigny prairies to the shores of the North Sea, the Meuse faces the obstacle that is the Ardennes Hills. It crosses the region slowly, taking many detours and winding meanders at the foot of the steep slopes of the mountains.
Forming a near-perfect loop, the Monthermé Meander is the most famous example.
Many easily accessible belvederes stand high over the valley, offering breathtaking views more than 200 m above the river itself. The two most beautiful are the panorama at Longue Roche (listed site) and at the Roche à Sept Heures (registered site).
