The Vingeanne Gorges
A small canyon carved into the rock gives this place a magical feel, where legends seem to abound...
The Vingeanne Gorges are both intimate and grandiose. The river comes crashing down between two narrow limestone walls, thereby forming the only canyon in Champagne-Ardenne. The Combe Royer valley, at the bottom of which the gorges are to be found, is lined with ramsons and is a lovely place for a fresh and relaxing stroll.
The name of the river owes its name, once again, to legend: During the Middle Ages, the valley was a favourite haunt of the Lord of Aprey and his wife, Jeanne. After her death, the young man returned regularly to mourn, casting his mind back to times past: "là vint Jeanne" [here came Jeanne] he would say to himself...
