The Rock of the Four Aymon Sons
At Bogny-sur-Meuse, in one of several meanders of the river, stands a rocky ridge of a very unusual shape. This natural site is very evocative of four riders on horseback and illustrates one of the scenes from the famous chanson de geste of the four Aymon Sons...
At the foot of this rocky peak stands a monumental sculpture by Albert Poncin (1950), representing the four brothers and their horse Bayard.
According to legend, the four sons of Duke Aymon, Renaud, Allard, Richard and Guichard, lived at the court of Charlemagne. Following a quarrel, Renaud fatally wounded a nephew of the Emperor, forcing the four brothers to escape the wrath of Charlemagne.
They took refuge in the Ardennes forest by riding on Bayard, their magic horse, who could cross the Meuse a single bound. There they built a castle (Château Regnault) and then after a long siege were again forced to hide in the thick Ardennes forest, where they remained for 7 years...
