The Meuse Ladies
Between Laifour and Revin, the Meuse digs deep into the Ardennes Hills. On its left bank, as it leaves a bend, stand three large rocks covered with beech trees...
An ancient legend recounts the origin of these rocks: at the time of the Crusades, the Lord of Hiergues had three sons, Héribrand, Geoffroy and Vauthier. He decided to marry them to the three daughters of the Lord of Rethel, Hodierne, Berthe and Ige.
Shortly after their marriage, the three young knights went on a crusade to go and free the city of Jerusalem.
Feeling betrayed, the three sisters were quick to replace their absent husbands by welcoming three other knights into their beds.
At the precise moment when the Crusaders liberated Jerusalem, God punished the three sisters for their adultery by changing them into these three large rocks, thereby condemning them to watch travellers go by on the river for all eternity.
