The Chalmessin Marshes
The Chalmessin Marshes are one of the 6 national nature reserves in Champagne-Ardenne...
It is here in this vast expanse of tufaceous marshland that the River Tille rises. The reserve comprises 124 ha of diverse habitats that are home to a remarkable biodiversity.
More than 20 plant species are classified as regional rare and protected species (Monkshood, for example), and 2 are protected at national level. Many animal species are also present including 59 species of birds. Butterflies and dragonflies (Southern damselfly, for example) are also well represented.
An educational trail on duckboards enables visitors to discover the marsh. It is currently managed by the Conservatoire du Patrimoine Naturel de Champagne-Ardenne. For example, highland cattle have been introduced to preserve the open spaces...
