The Rolampont Tufière Waterfall
A monumental staircase formed naturally by water runoff...
A listed site with an extremely lively biological habitat that has been active thousands of years, the 'tufière' rock of Rolampont (Haute-Marne) forms a natural monumental staircase carved out by runoff water.
This amounts to a veritable natural laboratory where the mosses are transformed into tuffaceous rock by means of the precipitation of the limestone that has been dissolved by infiltration water. The deposits of limestone and the growth of the mosses form cushions which rise to create a natural dam. The formation of the tuff leads to these characteristic cascade pools.
Montane plants are to be found here (such as the arctic alpine fern, which is rare in the plains), as well as a number of species of dragonfly, such as the Southern damselfly, which is in danger of extinction.
