Glass
Glass was already being made in Bayel by 1300, during the reign of Philip the Fair, but it was Venetian master glassmaker Mazzolay who founded the Manufacture Royale en Cristaux in the 17th century.
The establishment later became the Champagne Royal Crystal Works, and has never once turned off its ovens since its inception. With its 2,000 windows, a total of around 15,000 sq m, Champagne-Ardenne is also the region of Europe that retains the greatest number of ancient stained glass windows. The history of painting on glass began here in the 12th century and continues to this day thanks to the work of the glass workshops which still exist in the region.
