Champagne-Ardenne has always been at the heart of European events, from antiquity to the modern day.
In 451, Attila was defeated at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains between Troyes and Châlons.
In 498, Clovis was baptised at Reims by St. Remi. This event is often taken to be the founding moment for the French monarchy: from 1027 to 1825, 30 Kings, from Henry I to Charles X, came here to receive celestial unction.
1562, the massacre of Protestant worshippers in Wassy marked the beginning of the Wars of Religion.
1792, the Prussian offensive was halted at Valmy. The next day, the First Republic was proclaimed.
