The religious buildings
The Cathedral of Reims, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, is Champagne-Ardenne’s most famous religious building.
But the region has three other cathedrals and a host of other religious buildings.
Cathedrals, basilicas, churches and abbeys
Basilicas, collegiate churches, abbey churches... it is with surprise and delight that you will discover this testimony of the past, built by the will and faith of our ancestors.
Cistercian or Romanesque abbeys, head off in the footsteps of Bernard of Clairvaux, who was the master of monasticism in Champagne-Ardenne.
Fortified in the Thiérache region, made out of timber in the Bocage Champenois, of Romanesque style in the Ardre Valley...the churches attest to the fervour of those who built them.
Statuary and stained glass: sacred art
Tombs, altarpieces, rich carved woodwork...discover some little-known masterpieces. Vestiges of the cultural currents which made their way across the region, these sites served as inspiration for the sculptors and glass workers who forged the reputation of Champagne-Ardenne, which with 15,000 sq m of glass is Europe's richest region in terms of ancient stained-glass windows.
