The Champagne-Ardenne region, already quite engaged in valuing its architectural and cultural heritage, has chosen to develop a network of little towns of character ("Petites Cités de Caractère®").
This label, initiated in 1977 by Brittany, has already been adopted by others regions (Pays de la Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine ...). Its mission is to emphasize the authenticity and diversity of the heritage of small towns.
To merit this label, each candidate town must meet the prerequisite criteria of admission and must have a series of commitments favouring heritage, welcoming the public and animation. These criteria are detailed in a charter of quality. After examining the candidate's application and visiting the terrain, the ratification committee, composed of representatives from leading authorities on tourism, culture, architecture, and heritage, awarded the label to nine towns in Champagne and in Ardenne. Four other towns have been declared eligible, and are awaiting their label.
