More than 20 years after his last public presentation in France, the Haut-Marne artist Joseph Philibert Girault de Prangey is honored by the museums of Langres with a new exhibition.

An esthete, archaeologist, designer, photographer and art editor, Girault de Prangey was also a great traveler, exploring the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East on two great journeys. Drawings, watercolors, gouaches and daguerreotypes bear witness to the great monuments and landscapes of the countries crossed.

These documents are used to edit minute lithographs gathered in precious works describing ancient, Christian and Arab monuments of the Mediterranean basin. During the second part of his life, Girault de Prangey retired to his villa des Tuaires, near Langres, a small personal paradise between an exotic garden, greenhouses and a neo-oriental villa. In this very unique place, he pursues his dream of the Orient in another way.

All aspects of the busy life and work of this man of a thousand curiosities are presented in the exhibition. Acquired over the past ten years, unpublished watercolors and drawings are unveiled. Exceptional loans complete them. This exhibition aims to renew the perception of the artist and his work.
