Created by the sculptor Raymond Moretti, who wanted to create a "monument of light", this memorial marks the city's desire to maintain the spiritual values of Judaism which made its wealth in the Middle Ages.
This large sphere, 2.20m in diameter and 2.80m high, faces the Champagne theatre, close to the old Jewish cemetery where Rachi was buried (cemetery that disappeared in the 16th century). It rests on a hexagonal granite base representing France. In the centre of the black and white sphere, which takes up the symbolism of opposites, is the acronym of Rachi. Originally, a beam of light pointed towards the sky from the centre of the sphere, which is now suppressed so as not to hinder air traffic.
